YOUR PLACE IN THE RODA

A little courage.
A whole new way to move.

AFRO-BRAZILIAN ROOTS. QUEENS ENERGY. EVERYONE BELONGS.

01 / THE ART

More than a workout.
A way to connect.

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian art shaped by resistance, creativity, and community. It combines flowing martial-arts movements with rhythm, song, and a playful exchange between two people.

At its heart is the roda: a circle where people clap, sing, and play instruments while two capoeiristas move together. You learn to listen, respond, and find your own expression.

Here in Queens, explore movement, music, and culture with guidance at every step. You don’t need to arrive flexible or know how to cartwheel. Start where you are.

Michelle Trindade, capoeira teacher at Capoeira Luanda Queens

Professora Trindade

YOUR TEACHER / CAPOEIRA LUANDA QUEENS

Meet Trindade.

A dance educator and capoeira teacher bringing movement, culture, and community together in Queens.

Trindade studied dance at New York City’s LaGuardia High School of the Arts and Ballet Hispánico before earning a BFA in Dance from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She performed nationwide with different dance companies and has taught dance and coordinated youth afterschool and summer programs in East Harlem, Flushing, Queens, and Honolulu, Hawaii.

While in Hawaii, she raised more than $300,000 for teen employment training programs—work that reflects her commitment to creating opportunities for young people.

Trindade began training capoeira in Honolulu and joined Capoeira Luanda in 2003. Under the supervision of Contramestre Sabiá, she reached the level of Instrutora. She has taught capoeira to students of all ages and levels, including at the university level.

Our school is supported by the Capoeira Center of New York, a nonprofit dedicated to education and culture through capoeira.
